Why DevSecOps is Needed.
What is DevOps , and has it been such a hot topic over the past years? Well, that is a great question! This article will first give you a background on what DevOps is, identify the shortfalls of the current approach of DevOps , and where DevSecOps fits into the picture.
A short background on DevOps
DevOps combines people, processes, and automation to deliver continuous value to the organization. The very definition of DevOps is Development and Operations (Op’s) teams should work closely together as integrated teams to achieve the best possible results. The departments merge and work together towards common goals. Continuous integration and deployment (CI / CD) of the finished code requires a different organization and culture than before. DevOps unites culture, working methods, and tools and creates the best conditions for success. According to GitLab research [ref], 82% of developers are releasing code faster than before because of DevOps, with 70% provisioning and managing their infrastructure. These statistics prove the progress DevOps has made to solve the complexities in the development lifecycle.
Definition of DevSecOps
DevSecOps is a combination of DevOps and IT (Information Technology) Security Operations. DevSecOps is the next step in a movement towards a better security culture. The need for DevSecOps originates from the lack of security in the DevOps implementation. The DevSecOps practice is building security into the entire software development cycle; a few key areas are:
- Planning
- Build
- Testing
- Deploying
- Operations
In practice, a DevSecOps should be involved from the start of the design and in all the stages to Operations. By implementing security into the lifecycle and making security reports available directly to the developers, it allows for faster resolution and shifting the security responsibility towards the teams instead of silos. In an ideal world, DevOps and DevSecOps should be one; security should be baked in at every stage. A DevSecOps is highlighting the business need to strengthen and protect the company’s reputation and the community it serves. By taking the ownership to lead security within the Op’s team, The DevSecOps team should contribute by sharing security knowledge, so DevSecOps and DevOps align as one.
Security challenges that DevSecOps addresses and how they differ from yesterday’s challenges
In the era of cloud technology, security has become one of the highest priorities for many organizations due to an increase in threats and legal responsibility. Keeping up to date with
new vulnerabilities and compliance can, however, become time-consuming and costly. According to Gartner, in 2019, the IT Security spendings were set to exceed $124 Billion. [ref]
Organizations have started to adopt DevSecOps to have a more comprehensive and proactive approach. The question becomes, what does the DevSecOps philosophy achieve compared to an old fashion security approach?
The old ways of security teams must adapt to a rapidly changing environment that makes traditional security procedures inadequate. Two significant influences that make traditional security procedures obsolete are shorter and faster software lifecycles and less isolated microservice eco-system. This is compared to typical architects that are not based on microservices.
DevSecOps introduces an idea of thinking about security from the start, and one example is using security plugins in the development process like the IDE. With this simple change, developers can already start catching vulnerabilities before the code has even been committed to their repository. In an older approach, these vulnerabilities would not have been caught until a later stage in the lifecycle or worse until it has already been exploited. Development lifecycles are no longer dependent on having teams collaborate to fix vulnerabilities or large teams having to assess newly developed code for vulnerabilities. These old security processes tend to create long lead times and require more staff to match the development speed in which the DevOps approach brings.
The DevOps approach is to automate tasks where possible. The same applies to DevSecOps. When DevSecOps has been correctly implemented, developers can catch and fix vulnerabilities before release. As the organizations grow, the automation stays the same, meaning no additional staff cost to scaling security services, no additional lead times in the development lifecycle.
Challenges in establishing DevSecOps
All implementations have their challenges, hence why it is so important to focus on the correct things right from the start. Culture and behavior are one of the key item' s organizations need to address when implementing DevSecOps. As DevSecOps divides the security responsibility to multiple teams, it is important to make sure everyone understands why security is so important and why you must think about it at every step of the way. One way of solving the awareness is to hold relevant security education annually; an example of this would be to simulate attacks for all stakeholders to relate.
Why is it so important for people to understand security if the tools are doing most of the work?
All security vulnerabilities are important but there are so many types of security vulnerabilities, it can become confusing and overwhelming. Guidelines for which types of vulnerabilities and the impact levels should be priorities, therefore defined so that the organization knows where to focus its time and effort.
Another challenge that organizations often face, is finding the correct tools and services to properly support the development teams. Technology stacks may differ between organizations, so finding the right skill set to understand what service is needed for a specific technology stack comes as the first challenge. Once the correct services have been found, it is important to implement, configure, and integrate these services to fit the specific technology stack in the organization.

Earth Hour 2019 - Show your support for our planet.
Saturday, March 30 at 20:30 to 21:30, local time, the world takes a stand for the planet during WWF's Earth Hour - the world's largest environmental manifestation. We at ELITS want the future to be bright!
What we do
During Earth Hour, March 30 (20:30 to 21:30), we encourage all employees and customers to participate in Earth Hour.
We encourage you to participate in Earth Hour by switching off and try new climate-friendly actions in daily life, both at work and at home. We also encourage you to show support for Earth Hour by turning off the lights in your personal profiles in social media. Simply take a picture of yourself in the darkness and upload as a new profile picture. Then share it with your friends and colleagues and help spread the word. Use the tags #earthhour, #connect2earth, #ELITS
Earth Hour has become an exciting evening by both children and grown-ups. There are many ways to make the evening extra cozy, fun and memorable. Here are some examples:
- Switch off the lights at home and light some candles. Beeswax Candles are best from an environmental perspective.
- Invite people to a dark party. Gather a bunch of friends or family and cook climate-friendly food.
- Have a mindfulness moment. Meditate if you feel like it.
- Take pictures. Bring your camera, maybe a friend, and go out and take before- and after photos.
- Create light graffiti. You need a camera where you can set a slow shutter speed, and a flashlight or anything that shines. Instructions can be found on youtube.
- Have candlelight dinner. Invite one or a few you love for a really nice dinner.
- Find a date. (If you are single.) It is said to be climate smart to live together.
- Twinkle twinkle. If it´s a starry night, stargazing can be an exciting activity. Contact an observatory near you to see if they are open.
- Light a fire. Gather family and friends by the fire and tell stories. If the imagination is scant perhaps an audiobook is an alternative.
We are a company with environmental thinking also trying to influence other companies to take more responsibility for their environmental impact. ELITS support WWF, which makes our participation in Earth Hour is a matter of course.
ELITS and SUSE secure the cloud together.
SUSE, a leader in open-source solutions, and ELITS, a leader in the Swedish market in IT operations and infrastructure solutions for organizations with high data protection needs, announce a new collaboration with the aim of mutual growth both in the Swedish market and beyond.
– ELITS and SUSE each have long traditions of expertise dealing with Linux-based infrastructure in complex environments, and both companies have also taken leading roles when it comes to advising organizations regarding the best cloud solutions for their specific needs, says Daniel Byström, Partner Executive at SUSE. ‘‘In our collaboration we will provide branch-leading solutions built using open-source software, and ELITS will provide branch-leading guidance and expertise regarding development, implementation, and operations.’’
Safe data in the cloud
ELITS has a long history of delivering IT operations and infrastructure solutions for large organizations with complex environments, and the company has put a special emphasis on creating branch-leading solutions for protecting customer data.
– Many of our customers are active in the fiercely competitive global marketplace, which makes it necessary that their data is protected in the best possible way, says Börje Berg, Head of Sales at ELITS.
‘‘We are in the process of developing new ways to protect data in the cloud, which makes this a perfect opportunity to work even more closely together with the experts at SUSE!’’
Dare to challenge
This collaboration between SUSE and ELITS makes it simpler for Swedish businesses to obtain secure cloud solutions that meet their specific needs while protecting their data in a sustainable, far-sighted manner. Each organization has competence and experience in different parts of the world, so they will be working closely together to develop compelling joint offerings. While the initial focus for these efforts are located within Sweden, the goal from the beginning is to support customers with operations in other countries and continents as well.
– Even though we approach things from different angles, we at ELITS and SUSE have similar ways of thinking on multiple planes, since we are each customer-focused and far-sighted in everything that we do, says Börje Berg from ELITS.
‘‘Our abilities to challenge each other and approach things from different perspectives will result in new types of solutions which will benefit our customers.’’– SUSE has had a long and strong presence in Sweden and our success here is closely connected to the solutions that we have created for Swedish growth companies, says Daniel Byström from SUSE.
‘‘Besides the fact that we are now Swedish-owned, this new collaboration with ELITS creates new possibilities for us to create an even stronger local presence!’’

Thoughts from the OpenStack Summit 2016 in Barcelona
We sent three guys down to attend the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona, 25-28 October. What we didn´t count on was the fact they did not want to leave. But rest easy, we got them home safely and here are some thoughts and ideas that they brought back.
For those of you unfamiliar with OpenStack and the Summit it´s a community-based event where all the participants are involved in developing and discussing the most widely deployed open source cloud platform. This year OpenStack celebrate their 6th birthday, and the community now consists of 54 000 community members, 80 global user groups across 179 countries and more than 600 supporting companies.
Say Hello! to Maxime Guyot OpenStack – Technical Team Lead at ELITS and Jonathan Herlin – Cloud Engineer
What did you expect from the Summit before attending?
– I expected an action-packed summit with interesting discussions and presentations, says Maxime.
– I expected to see a lot of cool and interesting presentations as well as deep-diving into discussions regarding OpenStack and the technology around it. But also how other developers and companies apply OpenStack, Jonathan answers.
How were the expectations met during the actual summit?
– Oh, it was 100% and more. Fantastic people, presentations and community networking, Maxime replies.
– It was amazing! The sheer number of interesting topics and discussions was staggering. And on top of that you have the entertaining keynotes from the Foundation, says Jonathan.
What talks would you like to share with those who couldn’t attend?
– That´s a tough choice because there are so many to choose from. But maybe one that takes a very practical approach on how to get started with a private cloud and deploying OpenStack. You can check it out here…
Another session that really nailed down the organisational challenges of adopting a private cloud was BrokenStack. It highlights how business units can work together to deliver the best experience. Check it out here…
But on a more general note, the Operator Sessions (aka Ops-Sessions) were fantastic! It felt great to be part of the community and exchange experiences with other cloud operators from across the world, Maxime summarise.
– Walmart talked about how they are using OpenStack to help them with their business, as well as some information on how they are using Ceph for and object storage to handle data. Check it out here…
What do you feel are the trends for 2017 in regards to the OpenStack community?
– I am going to say that we are likely to see more OpenStack adoption in production and containers, containers, containers everywhere. Exciting times!, says Maxime
– The trend we are seeing and that cause a lot of discussions is that OpenStack is being used to replace traditional IT. Traditional IT is killing the creativity but with the help of OpenStack people who are not into traditional IT have an easy way of getting things done faster than before.
Any final thoughts?
– Well, going to the OpenStack Summit is always amazing. I can highly recommend it if you are in the industry, or just getting started in the community. But from a personal point of view, it was amazing to see how diverse the community is both in human terms, you could clearly see all the efforts around gender equality, but also in technological terms, the wide variety of companies and use-cases, Maxime ends.
– OpenStack is travelling fast and traditional IT is not keeping up. It was surprising to see that so many global companies are using OpenStack and how they have adopted it. I would recommend going to the summit even if you aren’t into OpenStack yet, there are a lot of entry level presentations that could benefit you immensely. And also you will meet a lot of experienced people and have a big community where you can get help answering your questions, Jonathan finishes.
Would you like to talk to Maxime, Jonathan or any of our other cloud experts at ELITS, just drop us a note, and let´s start sharing knowledge!
ELITS employee Luciano Patrao gets
selected as vExpert by VMware
We at ELITS are proud of each and every one of our employees. But once in a while, you feel extra proud of your co-worker's accomplishments. Today we celebrate the achievement of Luciano Patrao who has been awarded the title vExpert 2016 by VMware. Our most heartfelt congratulations Luciano! You are a true champion!
The vExperts get selected on the basis that they have demonstrated significant contributions to the VMware community and a willingness to share their expertise with others. The judges select people who are particularly engaged with their community and who develop a substantial personal platform of influence in those communities.
Congratulations on the achievement Luciano!
– Thanks! It a great honour to be selected by VMware. This has been a personal goal of mine and now its finally happened. I just hope that my contribution to the community has been of worth and that my colleagues feel the passion that put into my work. The fact there is only just over a thousand vExperts in the world makes this extra special. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody else that is contributing to the forums and discussions.
At ELITS we all know that creating a great customer experience is one the most effective tools when it comes to creating new and long-lived business relationships. So, how do you define “the best customer experience”? What added values do you fill these four words with? We at ELITS have our take on it; by empowering our employees and striving for a great corporate culture, we deliver the best customer experience. We can all agree that Luciano Patrao is a true champion of those values.
How everyone became of fan of Iceland, and why businesses need fans!
Why fans matter! By Jim Johansson, Head of Sales.
This isn´t a post about IT trends, innovation or outsourcing. This is a post about courage, commitment and devotion! I´m following the European Championship with great excitement, even though Sweden didn´t perform at the level I was hoping for.
If I was to make a wager before the Championship started, I would have most likely put my money on France, Germany or Spain. Or maybe even taken a “modest risk” and bet on Italy. If anyone told me to go for Iceland or even Wales, I would have laughed out loud.
ELITS is a bit like Iceland. Not that known, to be frank not known at all. We know that after conducting a brand awareness survey earlier this year. Are we proud of what we have achieved during the past ten years? Yes! 130 employees, 12 different locations around the world, working with one of the leading companies in the ICT business on a global scale, 19 different nationalities in the workforce, great results in our customer experience surveys, and the list goes on. Proud, but still with the ambition to go further. Not primarily in terms of revenue or profit, but in terms of more customer relationships, with the ambition to have the highest customer satisfaction in the business.
I imagine that Iceland has won a lot of fans outside their borders during the last couple of weeks, based on their performance that has been broadcasted to millions of viewers. Committed fans that shared the hopes and dreams of a small island nation. There is an important lesson to be learned in all of this. Companies need fans that share the same passion and ambition for the business. So how do you turn an existing or future client into a fan? We at ELITS have our own take on it; by exceeding expectations, putting the clients’ business ahead of our own and building the best team in the industry. Unfortunately, they don´t broadcast the European Championship in IT, but if they were, I would say that ELITS is equivalent to the Icelandic team. I would welcome an opportunity to “broadcast” ELITS directly to you, and give you a huge return on your bet!
Please feel free to get in touch, if you would like to have some more info about ELITS and how we can help you excel in your IT operations. We want more fans, and we are prepared to work hard as a team to exceed expectations!

Empowered employees deliver the best customer experience
Empowered employees deliver the best customer experience
We all know that creating a great customer experience is one the most effective tools when it comes to creating new and long-lived business relationships. So how do you define the best customer experience? What added values do you fill these four words with?
Most IT businesses try to market one of two things; cost save or technology that delivers efficiency. We at ELITS have our take on it; by empowering our employees and striving for a great corporate culture, we deliver the best customer experience. ELITS founder and CINO Fredrik Sjöstedt has always said…
"I believe that it must be possible to create a profitable company with a long-term focus, committed to quality in delivery and customer satisfaction. A company driven by the force of values and culture rather than quarterly profits."
It´s very easy for any company to adopt a tagline or produce marketing that promises a great customer experience and satisfaction. But how do you move an entire organisation from the promise of such a value, to actually delivering it. As Steve Jobs famously said:
“You´ve got to start with the customer experience and work back towards the technology - not the other way around.”
Yes, Apple is a hardware-focused company, but the words apply to any business having any form of relationship with a customer. Meaning all corporations. That is why all business and innovation at ELITS first pass through our core values; Local, Trust, Flexible and Responsive.
Local: We believe in building strong, lasting relationships with our customers, employees, suppliers and communities. A key component in this is by being present and available, working locally with our customers. This allows us to deliver true value and quality of work directly to the people around us.
Trust: We are honest and transparent externally and internally, always acting in our customers best interest. This is demonstrated by always delivering on our promises and providing an environment of trust and personal growth.
Flexible: We strive to find creative ways to get things done, and constantly want to improve – As individuals and as an organisation.
Responsive: We encourage creativity and embrace change, generating innovative solutions to changing business environments. By taking initiative and seeking simplicity we create, adapt and continuously enhance tools and processes for out customers. We make the effort to understand our customers and adapt our services to meet those needs.
Company values are the basis and provide a solid foundation for everyone to progress from. But how do you shift from words to action? At ELITS the solution is simple, we empower our employees. There is only one unremitting truth in business; change is constant. We at ELITS understand change, and we have made it our mission to come to grip with what is needed for our customers to be successful in an ever-changing market situation. Whether customers are experiencing increased competitive pressure or shifting markets conditions they need to have the ability, capability and solutions in place to act quickly and decisively. This is what our employees are experts at, making a sustainable difference for the customer and have the courage and mandate to do so. Our consultants understand that business and IT are just two sides of the same coin and therefore always implement efficient, flexible and innovative solutions. ELITS´ success lies within the fact that we, as a team together with our clients, dare to push the envelope and come up with inspiring, useful and business oriented solutions.
We mentioned courage previously, that is a tough one. Because courage is hard to describe. How do you evoke courage in yourself, in your day-to-day work and make it a part of doing business? We at Elits have our take on it; we explore courage by listening to others, explaining our services in an uncomplicated fashion and stepping out of the comfort zone. We have the courage to be open-minded and suggest solutions that we know are the best for our clients. This makes us different from our competitors. This transforms us into an IT-provider that is flexible, responsive and accommodating.
ELITS – Another kind of IT.
